Development of Tools and Technologies for Cell Systems Research: A Workflow-Based Approach
The development of systems to culture mammalian cells and tissues has been invaluable to our understanding of human health, physiology, and disease. Ever since the first culture of tissues in vitro in the late 19th century, scientists have simultaneously benefitted from the ability to study cells in a more controlled environment and recognized the limitations of the rudimentary nature of these systems. In spite of tremendous progress over the past 100+ years, this contradiction persists to this day. Recent advances in the use of cells to better recapitulate human physiology, manufacture therapeutic proteins, and facilitate groundbreaking therapies have highlighted the continuing need to develop tools and technologies that can better support the evolving requirements of cell-based research. This presentation will focus on enabling innovation in cell based systems through a deep understanding of scientific workflows and the subsequent identification of opportunities to improve functional performance and simplify complex protocols. Specific examples in the development of cell based models using pluripotent stem cells will be highlighted.
