Description:

Colloidal Photocatalysis with Emily Weiss

Abstract: This talk explores colloidal quantum dots as photocatalysts (or sensitizers within photocatalytic systems) for energy-relevant reactions, including reduction of CO2, oxidation of alcohols, carbon-carbon coupling, and proton reduction, and for enantioselective organic transformations. We will explore some unique characteristics of this material that enable them to mimic the light harvesting process of the photosynthetic reaction center, to perform both oxidations and reductions (such that sacrificial reagents aren't necessary) and to act as both the photocatalyst and the chiral director for an asymmetric reaction.
