Simulation Based Education Implementation Across the Spectrum of Physical Therapist Education

Description:

This presentation provides an overview of simulation-based education in entry-level physical therapist education and post-professional residency and continuing education.  A brief history of evolution of simulation education, best practices for implementation and execution of simulation in physical therapist education will be discussed. Evidence will be provided on how simulation education assists faculty in meeting students learning needs not easily met through more traditional educational methods. Examples of simulation education from within the presenters own DPT and Residency curriculums will be provided alongside key information for potential future steps to consider with simulation based education.  

 

Dr. Kristin Greenwood PT, DPT, EdD, MS, GCS is an Associate Clinical Professor and Interim Department Chair in the Department of Physical Therapy, Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences at Northeastern University. Her scholarship focus is on preparing students for acute care physical therapist practice and interprofessional simulation. Kristin has worked to advance entry-level acute care education through her work with the Academy of Acute Care Physical therapy including leading the task force to develop the Core Competencies for Entry-level Practice in Acute Care Physical Therapy. Kristin has received several awards including the James Dunleavey Acute Care Physical Therapy Distinguished Service Award and Bouvé College of Health Sciences Undergraduate Bouvé Distinguished Educator Award. Kristin is an American Board of Physical Therapist Specialists certified geriatric clinical specialist, received her simulation instructor training from the Harvard/MIT Center for Medical Simulation and has her Doctorate in Education with a concentration in Curriculum Leadership and Learning from Northeastern University.
