Faculty Workshop: What Faculty Can Learn from an Actor/Improv Teacher about Engaging Students in Their Classes

While teaching, faculty generally want their students to tune in, "get it," and be excited about what they are learning. Theater actors have similar goals--and in a world of Blue Man Group and improv, actors often also get people out of their chairs as active participants.

This workshop offers an opportunity for faculty to get a new perspective on how they might inspire students to get more engaged in class activities and discussions, and be more absorbed in the material that is being taught.

Faculty will prepare and present a two-minute version of a sample lecture for the group, with interactive feedback from the instructor. We will focus on physical and verbal communication skills, helping faculty explore how they can connect, and engage with student audiences through an assortment of improv techniques--techniques to mentally and physically prepare for class decreasing “stage”-fright and building confidence.
