Description:

Northwestern University Transportation Center presents:

"Navigating the Maelstrom; Perspectives on and Challenges Facing Transit in a Turbulent and Uncertain World"

BRENDON HEMILY
PhD, Hemily & Associates, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

ABSTRACT:

Public transit systems have always faced a challenging task, trying to pursue complex objectives with constrained resources, high public expectations and operating in an auto-dominated environment. However, in recent years, the operational and organizational environment in which public transit operates has become far more complicated, turbulent and uncertain—an external environment over which the industry has often little control. Dr. Hemily’s unusual career path has enabled him to monitor transit industry trends and developments from a rather unique perspective, and his presentation will provide personal perspectives on the challenges and possible directions for the future.

SPEAKER BIO:

An independent transit consultant with 35 years of international transit experience, Dr. Hemily focuses on best practices and innovation in the transit industry, in the areas of policy, management, planning, and advanced technology. He provided support to USDOT from 2007 to 2018 related to Transit ITS, connected vehicle technology, mobility on demand, etc.

From 1985 to 2000, Brendon worked at the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), the Canadian counterpart to APTA, where he was responsible for all of CUTA’s research, statistical, and technical services. Brendon has a Ph.D. in Transportation and a M.S. in Civil Engineering, both from M.I.T., and a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University. He is Past Chair and Emeritus Member of TRB’s Public Transportation Planning and Development Committee, and is the incoming Chair of the TRB Public Transportation Group, which has 15 committees.
