Youth Mentoring Opportunity – Science Club
A science mentorship program at the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club
Organized by the Center for Genetic Medicine and Science in Society, Northwestern University

We are seeking ~ 12 graduate students and/or staff to volunteer at an after school science mentorship program called Science Club. This federally funded initiative, now in its fifth year, is designed to spark middle school kids' interest in science and teach "scientific habits of mind" through challenging, hands-on, biomedically-based lab activities. In fall 2014 the program will serve 60 youth weekly, with sessions led by ~ 30 graduate student and staff mentors.

Of note, Science Club received the 2013 STEM Impact Award from the Afterschool Alliance. More than 200 programs nationally were nominated for this prestigious award (http://goo.gl/Bkqg2I).

The details:
• Meets once per week from 4:00-5:30 pm at the Pedersen-McCormick Boys & Girls Club, 4835 N. Sheridan Road
• Mentor training/orientation provided each quarter
• Cab transportation provided to Boys & Girls Club from CH and EV campuses
• Quarterly mentor professional development seminars
• Opportunities to participate in curriculum development

Mentor Eligibility:
• Open to grad students, postdocs, and staff
• Life Sciences Graduate students should be entering their THIRD YEAR (or beyond) as of Sept 2014 to participate (e.g. passed qualifying exams)
• Engineering or chemistry students that may be in their first or second years of grad school, but should have chosen thesis labs
• PI permission is required

Science Club is run as an educational research study, funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Accordingly, mentor applicants will be asked to participate in a short interview, and, if selected, complete a formal consent process as part of the research study.
