Josh Meyer, Director, Medill National Security Journalism Initiative
Josh Meyer is the McCormick Lecturer in National Security Studies at Medill’s Washington program, where he teaches graduate level journalism classes on covering conflicts, terrorism and national security. He is also director for education and outreach for the Medill National Security Journalism Initiative, which aims to find the best ways to do, and to teach, these all-important kinds of journalism in this changing media environment—including covering terrorism, war, nuclear proliferation, intelligence and law enforcement reform, to name a few.
He is helping build the initiative into a full-fledged center that assists and informs students, working journalists, scholars and those working in the various fields of national security on related issues of interest. Josh left the LA Times/Tribune Washington Bureau in early 2010 to join the Medill Washington Program. Meyer, who spent 20 years at the Times, the last 10 as national security writer, also leads groups of post-graduate students on three-month investigative projects and works with graduate students reporting for the Medill News Service. At the Times, Meyer won or shared in numerous local, state and national awards, including two staff Pulitzers and a group Overseas Press Club award for his pre-Sept. 11 coverage of Al Qaeda’s interest in establishing a US presence and launching attacks on US soil.
