Description:

Title: Materials design and functionality in low dimensions

Speaker: Professor Christos Panagopoulos, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Abstract: Artificially engineered materials offer an appealing route to create a variety of states, from exotic superconducting phases to unconventional magnetic and ferroelectric behaviors. I will discuss our effort to understand and employ properti es of quantum mechanics in order to develop systems with functionalities arising from a collective interaction of electrons in low dimensions. The talk will introduce examples of quantum matter where by varying the materials architecture and selective external perturbations we deliver a broad range of structures, and devices with novel electromagnetic properties controllable at the atomic level. These include multiferroics, Archimedean quantum magnets, spin valves and low dimensional superconductors .
