Description:

Title: Transverse Spin in Proton Structure and Chromodynamics

Speaker: Matthias Perdekamp, UIC

Abstract:

25 years ago, the E704 Experiment at Fermilab discovered large transverse spin asymmetries in striking violation of QCD expectations. In response to the E704 result broad efforts were undertaken in theory and experiment to reconcile the observed transverse spin phenomena with Chromodynamics.

Transverse spin observables were studied in high energy polarized lepton-nucleon and proton-proton scattering experiments at BNL, CERN, DESY and Jefferson Laboratory, as well as in e+-e- annihilation at KEK, SLAC and BEPC-II. The experimental effort included the development of novel instrumentation for high intensity polarized sources, polarized targets, beam polarimeters and for the acceleration of polarized beams.

The seminar will review critical measurements of the experimental campaign and describe what we learned on the way about transverse spin structure of the proton and the origin of large transverse spin asymmetries in QCD.
