"[T]hey say Black men won’t make it, but I know I’m gonna make it”:
The intersections of race and gender in adolescent identity development
Abstract:
In this talk, I provide an overview of my theoretical orientation for examining identity development and present data from two longitudinal analyses of racial and gender identity among Black adolescent boys (13-15 years old) attending an all-Black male high school. The first analysis uses growth curve modeling to examine the association between racial and gender identity and their impact on boys’ psychosocial adjustment over time. The second analysis uses in-depth interview methods to investigate how boys both resist and accommodate to racial and gender stereotypes in developing their identities. I conclude with a discussion of my current projects, including an ongoing analysis of racial and gender identity among Black, White and Mixed-Race children (7-11 years old), as well as implications for educators, families, communities, and schools.
