Guohua Wei-- "Quantum Confinement in 2D Semiconductors"
Abstract: Reducing the dimension of semiconductors has proven to be extremely interesting for both fundamental scientific studies and technological applications. In this talk, I will discuss quantum confinement in the recent star materials of condensed matter physics and materials science, the layered two-dimensional semiconductors. I will show a controllable way of fabricating laterally confined excitons in a single atomic-scale layer of molybdenum disulphide, a direct bandgap semiconductor. The resulting size-tunable monolayers are shown to preserve the distinct valley polarization characteristic of the unprocessed 2D semiconductor.
