Glen Goodman: Germans in Brazil: Exploring Ethnic Connections
Presenter: Glen Goodman from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
This talk explores the multiple understandings and meanings of German ethnic identity in Brazil, from the arrival of the first German immigrants in the 19th century to the present day.
Goodman's work focuses on the intersection between immigration, ethnicity, and regional and national identity in twentieth century Brazil, with a special attention to the evolution of German-Brazilian identity in local (primarily Rio Grande do Sul) and national contexts. He incorporates tourism, cuisine, and architecture into his research.
