Title: Controversial phenomena in HEP and the five sigma criterion
Speaker: Tommaso Dorigo, CERN
Abstract: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. The p < 0.000029% criterion used in HEP and astro-HEP to define the significance required to claim a discovery does not appear adequate to cover all experimental situations. The seminar will take as a starting point a short history of spurious signals found in HEP data and their sometimes complex resolution, to then focus on the statistical problem of defining a proper discovery level for new phenomena and on the non-trivial issues it entails.
