Description:

Discussions about avant-garde films of the 1920s usually relate to European, Soviet or North-American productions. Films from so-called peripheral countries are rarely ever mentioned in this context. This screening of Limite, made in 1930 by Brazilian director Mário Peixoto and considered a landmark film in the history of Brazil’s avant-garde cinematic history, offers a corrective to this neglect. Rather than providing us with a story, or even presenting us with the psychological state of mind among its characters, Peixoto’s film “thinks” in pictures, movements and angles, interweaving diverse visual fields by using certain symbolic themes and variations. In this sense Limite practices what French theorist and filmmaker Germaine Dulac had demanded in 1927: the “real” filmmaker should “divest cinema of all elements not particular to it, to seek its true essence in the consciousness of movement and visual rhythms.” Peixot’s Limite in this sense is an opportunity consider Brazil’s contribution to avant-garde film-making globally.
