Workshop Description:

Concrete expectations for complex tasks, feedback focused on process and student growth, efficient and robust evaluation tools: a good rubric can make you run faster, jump higher, and assess with the best. This pair of workshops will focus on the elements of rubric design and implementation—from analyzing assessment tasks, to selecting appropriate rubric structures, to drafting and adapting rubrics for classroom use. Batteries not included.

In Part 1, we will focus on the key concepts and best practices of rubric development: identifying an assessment task, breaking down components skills, and picking a rubric type that best fits learning. Participants should come with a specific learning objective and/or assessment task to focus on. We will end this workshop ready to draft a rubric.

In Part 2, we will focus on preparing rubrics for classroom use: aligning rubrics with course outcomes, clearly articulating expectations of student performance, and integrating rubrics into assessment and feedback practices. Participants should come with a fully drafted rubric to share and workshop. We will end this workshop with rubrics ready to tweak, revise, and implement.

(Note: Participating in Part 2 requires a fully drafted rubric. Attending Part 1 is not a prerequisite for Part 2, but the latter workshop is intentionally designed for participants with a basic knowledge of rubric design and a fully drafted rubric to share and workshop.)

Workshop Facilitators:

A PhD candidate and T.H. Breen Fellow at the Chabraja Center for Historical Studies, Matt June specializes in 20th century United States politics and society.

Grace Larson is a fifth-year doctoral student in Psychology department studying the effects of emotional synchrony within close relationships.
