Description:

A day of arts, awareness and activism
 
Artists exhibits and workshops 2.30-4pm in Kresge, 2nd floor.

Film screening and talk 4-5pm in Annie May Swift Helmerich auditorium

Picnic dinner and dancing to DJ, 5-7pm outside if sunny/ or inside Kresge if raining
 
An exploration of the journeys of forced migration and celebration of refugees.

How can we support and help refugees in our neighborhoods?  How can artists and the humanities address the humanitarian crisis and affect change?
Visiting artists and Northwestern artists and scholars, faculty, graduate and undergraduate students will lead workshops and discussions, display their work and create new art in response to the stories and experiences shared today.  You are invited to observe and participate.
The day will culminate with a community picnic with Persian food and global music by DJ Sultan.

Participating artists include:

Emadeddin Tayefeh, film maker and School of Communication/Mellon refugee artist in residence will show a cut of his Public Enemies and be in conversation.

Axis Lab, presenting Scents of Home: Song, A Cookbook and Archive Preview of Argyle, a series of essential ingredients to Vietnamese cooking are presented as fragrant oils. Stories from the Vietnamese community in Chicago accompany each fragrance. Participants are asked to reflect on these ingredients and engage their own sense of memory and identity with the goal that this exchange helps participants to understand how food is an essential ingredient to grappling with a history of forced migration and resettlement.

Firas Aladai, film director, will show a cut of his 2015 film Winter and be in conversation.

Hossein Fatemi, photographer, will share his images of conflict and flight and be in conversation.

Alex Lederman, current Northwestern undergraduate student, will show his short documentary From Damascus to Chicago, which follows a Syrian refugee family as it transitions to life in Chicago.

Huong Ngo, artist,will offer a printmaking workshop where participants make prints based on translations of words important to the refugee experience.

Ronnie Malley, musician, with music from the Lavant and North Africa.
