Creating Effective Learning Communities*
Tuesday, April 4, 3:30pm - 5:00pm and Tuesday, April 18, 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching
Searle Center Library
627 Dartmouth Place
Evanston, IL
Workshop Description:
Learning communities are valuable because they bring people together for shared learning, discovery, and the generation of knowledge. This workshop will help graduate students and postdocs describe the relative value of learning communities and identify the characteristics of successful learning communities in either teaching or research settings. In the first workshop, participants explore research findings in guided discussion and describe the characteristics of effective learning communities.
Between the first and second session, participants use a rubric to observe a learning community in action, returning to share their observations and collaboratively develop action plans for improvement and development.
Participants are expected to attend 2 sessions (April 4 and April 18). The first session is 90 minutes and the second session is 60 minutes.
Workshop Facilitator:
Professor Goldberg is the Director of the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, Assistant Provost for Learning and Teaching and Professor of Physics and Astronomy. He has more than two decades of experience in designing and implementing active learning workshops for graduate students and postdocs, and is co-author of two MOOCs in developing learning and teaching skills for future faculty. Having recently arrived from Boston, he is excited to start working with the graduate student and postdoc communities at Northwestern.
*This workshop is part of CIRTL at Northwestern which strives to advance learning in the STEM disciplines by providing professional development programs for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Create a CIRTL Network Account.
