Breast Cancer: A Personal and Professional Journey Pamela K. Levangie, PT, DSc, DPT, FAPTA

Abstract: The Ann Putnam Kaleckas Lecture will provide an overview of Dr. Levangie’s road through treatment for stage III breast cancer and its impact on her professional journey. Emphasis will be on the effects of radiation-induced fibrosis and its potential role in individuals with a history of breast cancer seeking treatment for shoulder dysfunction.

Bio: Dr. Levangie received a BS in PT from Northeastern University, an MS from Boston University, a DSc in Epidemiology from Boston University’s School of Public Health and her DPT degree from MGH Institute of Health Professions. Having served in both teaching and administrative roles in the physical therapy programs at Boston University (Boston, MA) and at Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT), Dr. Levangie is currently a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at MGH Institute of Health Professions. She is co-author of Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive Analysis - a staple text in many physical therapy programs with its 6th edition due for publication in 2018. Dr. Levangie served on the Editorial Board of Physical Therapy for 5 years, was a two term President and two term Secretary of APTA’s Section on Research, and was an ex officio member of the Scientific Review Committee of the Foundation for Physical Therapy for 4 years. Dr. Levangie currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT). Dr. Levangie was the 2001 recipient of the APTA’s Baethke-Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching and was named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association in 2009. Dr. Levangie has taught both kinesiology and principles of evidence-based practice for many years to both entry-level students and practicing clinicians. She has a particular interest in the psychometric properties of outcomes measures. A survivor of breast cancer, Dr. Levangie combines her expertise in kinesiology and application of scientific evidence to pursue her research interest in the area of long-term effects of surgery and radiation on shoulder complex function, publishing and speaking regionally and nationally on the topic.
