Lecture by Dr. Petra Rivera-Rideau, Assistant Professor of
American Studies at Wellesley College
This talk explores the different ways that Afro-Puerto Rican signifiers such as bomba have found their way into reggaetón music videos and performance. What messages about race and Puerto Rican identity are embedded in these representations? How do they reinforce or challenge dominant ideas about a racially harmonious Puerto Rico? Through a close examination of reggaetón songs ranging from Tego Calderón's 2002 "Loíza" to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's recent hit "Despacito," I consider these questions to explore the intersections between race, reggaetón, and Puerto Rican identities.
