More Info

Seventy-five percent of hospitalists now care for patients in the Intensive Care Unit, indicating an increased need for competency-based education targeted at the management of critical care. This course intends to focus on various topics that pertain to critical care medicine and provide hospitalists with essential information to manage this patient population. Our course will incorporate a mechanical ventilator workshop, which includes a real time demonstration of modes and waveforms using an artificial lung and simulated patient. In addition, our speakers will provide updates on some of the most pertinent areas of critical illness frequently faced by hospitalists.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1) Describe an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.
2) Formulate a strategy to minimize risk and improve patient safety in the ICU.
3) Recite the approach to patients with acute hypoxemic and acute hypercapnic respiratory failure.
4) Demonstrate the ability to set, adjust and troubleshoot the mechanical ventilator.
