Eastern European Delights explores the transformation of simple folk melodies into captivating works of art. Martinů was a prolific composer, often using folk melodies from his native Czechoslovakia with wit and charm in his innovative Neoclassical works. Dohnányi, by contrast, imbued folk tunes from his native Hungary with his own romanticism, emotion, and lushness. The program closes with the elegantly brilliant and rhythmically gripping Variations on a Theme of Pergolesi by Czech composer Ilja Hurník, commissioned by Rembrandt Chamber Musicians in 1995.
Bohuslav MARTINŮ: Promenades for flute, violin, and harpsichord, H. 274
Bohuslav MARTINŮ: Quartet for oboe, violin, cello, and piano, H. 315
Ernő DOHNÁNYI: Piano Quintet No. 1 in C Minor, op. 1
Ilja HURNÍK: Variations on a Theme of Pergolesi for flute, oboe, violin, viola, cello, and piano
