Description:

Title: The Perils of Hunting WIMPs, or How to build a better mousetrap

Speaker: Eric Dahl, Northwestern University, Department of Physics & Astronomy

Abstract: For the past three decades, experimentalists have been hunting for WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles), the leading candidate for the dark matter that makes up 85% of the matter in the universe. Thirty years and six orders-of-magnitude in sensitivity later, WIMPs remain the favored dark matter candidate, but the technologies used to look for them have been reinvented multiple times. I will describe the crux of the WIMP detection problem, the current state of the art for multi-ton WIMP detectors, and the work our group is doing to open the door to one more generation of WIMP detection experiments (with new avenues in neutrino physics on the side).
