THE U.S. REFUGEE/IMMIGRATION DEBATE: WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

Our nation wrestles with chaos in the immigration sphere. On Oct. 10, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on President Donald Trump’s travel ban prohibiting refugees/immigration from six Muslim majority countries and temporarily closing the U.S. refugee program. The President last month rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which in six months would strip legal protections from 800,000 young ‘Dreamers’ brought to the U.S. as children. Meanwhile, the RAISE Act — a bill introduced in Congress in July with White House backing aims to cut legal permanent immigration to the US by half over the next decade.

It’s time for a deeper conversation.

With America at a crossroads, Northwestern University’s Office of Institutional Diversity & Inclusion, Medill School of Journalism, and the National Association of Black Journalists Chicago Chapter join forcces on one of the most critical issues of our time: the U.S. Refugee/Immigration Debate.

PANEL DISCUSSION

Against ideological, political and racial divisions that tear at the very fabric of our nation, Americans are on a new journey calling for a deeper understanding of our differences in culture and values and open and honest discourse as to how we hold on to those values through rational government policy.

On October 24, 2017, at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law’s Lincoln Hall, 357 E. Chicago, a new Straight Talk series will dare to examine “What Next” in a provocative and critical panel discussion on the U.S. Refugee/Immigration Debate. While respecting and celebrating diversity, our intent is to educate and unify, by bringing together foremost thought leaders as well as a host of grassroots nonprofits long active in Chicago within the refugee/immigration sphere.
