The Benefits, Limitations, and Potential of Bilateral Cochlear Implants
Many individuals that, either lose their hearing or are born without hearing, receive a cochlear implant. While cochlear implants provide considerable benefits to these individuals in quiet environments, cochlear implant users continue to struggle in noisy environments. In recent years, people have begun to receive cochlear implants in both ears. This has resulted in a notable improvement, including improved speech understanding in noisy environments and the ability to localize where sounds come from. Despite these improvements, bilateral cochlear implant users are still not able to take full advantage of having two ears. This talk will discuss the benefits and limitations of bilateral cochlear implants and promising directions to help these patients perform
