Description:

In this workshop, participants will learn what Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) are and how to implement them as non-graded activities for enriching student engagement and comprehension. We approach CATs as an exercise in intentionality- guiding instructors and TAs to plan activities that elicit student reflection, while also providing a framework for brief activities in the classroom.

Participants will: 1) Explore how non-graded, anonymous assignments can assess student learning and identify problem areas 2) Develop CATs suited to their discipline, classroom needs, and teaching style 3) Discuss how CATs as a casual, low-stakes, engaging format can affect each participant’s specific classroom, and to what end participants will utilize them in the future.

We will offer practical resources for identifying different types of CATs, as well as activities for participants to apply them to their classroom focus and receive peer feedback. Participants will leave this workshop with greater experience in designing and implementing non-graded classroom activities, whether as a daily practice or a way to salvage a difficult lesson plan. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to attend.
