"RETHINKING THE PATHOGENESIS OF ANASTOMOTIC LEAK, ILEUS AND SURGICAL SITE INFECTION IN THE ERA OF MICROBIOME MEDICINE"

The Department of Surgery would like to present John Alverdy, M.D., FACS as he speaks for the Loyal Davis, M.D. Lectureship on "Rethinking the Pathogenesis of Anastomotic Leak, Ileus and Surgical Site Infection in the Era of Microbiome Medicine".

Dr. Alverdy is senior research scientist in the department of surgery, a trauma/ critical care surgeon for 15 years, and a gastrointestinal surgeon with an active practice.  Dr. Alverdy has more than 15 years of experience as a PI running a 7 person basic science laboratory at the University of Chicago. He collaborates with multiple investigators and mentors undergraduate and medical students and postdoctoral surgical research fellows. Dr. Alverdy is a longtime member and the current associate director of the Digestive Disease Research Center Core (DDRCC). He is a longtime collaborator with its director, Dr. Eugene Chang. Dr. Alverdy helps oversee a large group of investigators focused on host-pathogen interactions in the gut within the DDRCC Inflammatory Bowel Disease research program where a major theme is the role of the microbiome on intestinal inflammation and sepsis. Dr. Alverdy has worked on various budgets, recruitments, interdisciplinary retreats, data sharing plans, and planning sessions for both the Department of Surgery as Executive Chair, with the DDRCC, and with his own laboratory.
