DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in a career in renewable energy\, but unsure where to start? The Technology & Business of Energy (TBOE) Seminars are designed to give you a practical introduction to the basics of the energy industry\, as well as serve as a space to network with likeminded students. Northwestern MBA and STEM PhD students will lead broad discussions focusing on the key concepts required to discuss energy intelligently.  Seminars will take place Fridays in Kellogg Global Hub Rm. 2130 from 12:15-1:15pm. Free Krishna lunch (vegetarian Indian boxed lunch) will be provided to registered participants. SERIES SCHEDULE:  February 23rd: Energy up to 2010: Fossil Fuels\, Hydro and NuclearFossil fuels drove the industrial revolution and rapid economic growth over the last century. The first seminar will introduce why transitioning to cleaner fuel sources is important\, and address the difficulties in doing so.  March 2nd: Public Utilities and the Electricity Grid The public utility market and electricity grid were designed for centralized\, reliable production. How will they adapt to address the challenges of renewable energy sources?  March 9th: Energy Efficiency and Government Incentives Often referred to as the “first fuel” in a clean energy economy\, energy efficiency lowers energy usage and reduces emissions. Learn about the technology and government programs enabling increased efficiency.  March 16th: Wind and Solar\, and Renewable Financing Wind and Solar are the fastest growing renewable energy sources in the U.S. Learn about what is driving their growth and the economics of clean energy.  April 6th: Startups and Disruption in the Energy Industry We will hear about the journey and lessons learned from Hazel Technologies LLC\, a recent NU sustainability startup. Also\, why innovation in the energy industry is largely coming from start-ups rather than utilities.  April 13th: Energy Storage Intermittency of renewable sources would be far less problematic with scalable energy storage technologies. Learn about what technologies are most promising.  April 20th: Transportation Fuels and Infrastructure Transportation accounts for about one third of U.S. energy consumption. We will look at the specific economic and technological barriers to transitioning to clean transportation.  April 27th: Energy Policy and the 2017 Tax BillHow will the U.S. tax bill passed at the end of 2017 effect the clean energy economy?
