As the 50th anniversary of his work on Africa nears, Richard Joseph (Northwestern) will introduce the topic and share reflections on global authoritarianism and recent upheavals in Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Some favored states today are resiliently autocratic (Rwanda, Uganda); some electoral democracies are faltering (Zambia); and some countries do not even allow flawed elections to take place (Congo-Kinshasa).
