Description:

In connection with One Book One Northwestern, join Northwestern University School of Professional Studies (SPS) for a special lunchtime table talk on Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. Juan Martinez, author of the acclaimed short story collection Best Worst American, will discuss how influential the novel has been for creative practitioners who straddle the speculative and the literary. Linda Bubon, co-founder and former owner of Women & Children First bookstore, will speak about the selling history of The Handmaid’s Tale and its impact on dialogues about feminism and patriarchy. Finally, Kasey Evans, Faculty Director of the MA in Liberal Studies program at SPS, will survey literary criticism of the novel from its publication in 1985 through its recent resurgence.
