Interactive Session: Transforming Curriculum by Emphasizing Student Competencies, Authentic Assessment, and Building Faculty Community

Tuesday, April 23, 2019

4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Guild Lounge - Scott Hall | 601 University Place | Evanston, IL 60201

Curriculum has long been designed around what faculty value as disciplinary knowledge, largely delivered in the same mode they learned. Recently, many professional and liberal arts disciplinary societies have undergone a paradigm shift, from a focus on providing content to a more learner-focused view that places student learning and competency at the core. As a case study, Northwestern’s Master of Public Health (MPH) Program has pursued an educational transformation over the past three years. Based on trends in academic public health, our program is placing further emphasis on student competencies, related assessment activities, and instructional excellence. In partnership with Northwestern’s Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, we will share the lessons we learned about course development and revision, faculty engagement and support, and the program architecture. We will also discuss how we aligned our curriculum around learning.

We invite you to explore: How can a learner-focused perspective be integrated into your curriculum? How can you build community around the process of re-examining a curriculum? How can you and your faculty think about, express, and educationally operationalize the notion of competency in your discipline? What concrete steps should you and your faculty take to engage in this paradigm shift for all students’ benefit?

Lead by:

Michael Fagen, PhD, MPH, directs the Program in Public Health and is Chief of the Public Health Practice Division in the Feinberg School of Medicine’s Department of Preventive Medicine. Prior to joining Northwestern’s faculty, Michael was on faculty in the Northeastern Illinois University College of Education and the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. Michael cares deeply about delivering educational programming that is student-centered, instructionally excellent, and coherently designed.

Leah C. Neubauer, EdD, MA, is an Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and directs Accreditation for the Program in Public Health (PPH) in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. She leads and collaborates on projects that employ mixed-method approaches to develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate theory-driven, culturally.
