While Madame de Pompadour is best known as mistress to Louis XV, she was no mere vixen. Mesmerizing, fiercely clever, beautiful, and a relentless social climber, de Pompadour ultimately rose to a powerful yet precarious position: chief confidante to the King. The Newberry Consort’s season closer, guest-directed by Debra Nagy, explores de Pompadour’s singular life through the music she loved to listen to and sing herself, including songs, cantatas, instrumental works, and opera excerpts by Jean-Phillipe Rameau, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, François Colin de Blamont, Pierre de la Garde, and more.
