Description:

The Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites you to join in the discussion at our “Sustainability Justice” conference this Fall.

Scheduled for Sept. 24-25, 2019, in the Illini Union, iSEE Congress 2019 will bring together a diverse group of researchers, educators, journalists, and activists to discuss policy, environmental law, ecological design, planning, global trade, and the social dimensions surrounding these topics.

Highlights include Wednesday Keynote, Kimberley Wassermann-Nieto, Executive Director of Little Village Environmental Organization, advocating for healthier communities in Chicago, Ill; and a Roundtable discussion on sustainable water.

Registration is free and open to all. Congress takes place at Illinois’ Illini Union, located at 1401 W. Green St. Meals are provided. Additional venue and travel information can be found at go.illinois.edu/Congress2019.

iSEE’s Congress 2019 presents a unique opportunity for sustainability professionals to hear from and network with renowned experts on a number of environmental justice issues.

Environmental justice began as a social movement two decades ago, and is now a keystone concept driving the broader sustainability project. Simultaneously representing a field of scholarship, political agenda, and framework for understanding our fast-changing world, the marriage of social justice and sustainability has moved beyond its initial focus on the inequitable distribution of environmental burdens to incorporate a range of pressing social and ecological issues — Black Lives Matter, indigenous rights, climate change, and biodiversity loss, to name just a few — within a unifying framework that strives to realize sustainable justice for all.
