This Idea Dialogue lunch will serve as an opportunity to speak informally with colleagues across the University about issues and questions relevant to the following problem:
Who is a citizen? The question is one of membership in a government, with both rights and responsibilities. How expansive (or not) we make the definition of ‘citizen’ is a hotly debated policy question, and the answer is closely related to the scope of rights and benefits that come with membership. Additionally, the definition of ‘citizen’ is connected to economic growth, since increased wealth may motivate the closing of borders but expansion of the definition can have a positive impact on wealth. In this idea dialogue, scholars will discuss the relationship between citizenship, rights, and economic development in a global framework.
Persons with relevant expertise, experience, or interest are welcome to contact Emory Erker-Lynch at emory.erkerlynch@northwestern.edu to express interest in participation.
