Seminar: The Epigenetic Language of Host-Microbial Interactions
Speaker: Zheng Kuang, PhD, Univerity of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Host: Bacteriology Faculty Search Committee, Hank Seifert, PhD
Topic:
Trillions of different microorganisms reside in our gut, which play essential roles in regulating our metabolic and immune functions. I recently showed that these microbes activate a histone deacetylase, HDAC3 in the intestinal epithelium, which drives a daily rhythm in metabolism and diet-induced obesity. I also identified another epigenetic pathway by which the gut microbes regulate mucosal defense proteins in the intestinal secretory cells to affect the mucosal barrier integrity.
