This is the first webinar in a series focused on bringing frontline information on how COVID is affecting refugees around the world.
Please join us for this webinar with humanitarian advocates Madi Williamson and Leena Zahra examining the dire implications of the Covid-19 pandemic for refugees - focusing on Greece.
Madi Williamson is a registered nurse and career humanitarian and medical aid worker. She has spent the past four years volunteering in acute and post-acute humanitarian crisis zones with a focus on Greece. Her organization, In-Sight Collaborative, has partnered with other organizations in Lebanon and Chios to promote systems of aid delivery that focus on restoring the autonomy of affected populations. In-Sight advocates an approach in the humanitarian field in which displaced people are seen as active participants in their circumstance rather than passive beneficiaries. Madi’s personal focus areas are mental health, public health and population health.
Leena Zahra is a Syrian-American social justice champion who elevates connections through innovative storytelling and strategic community building. She completed a Master’s in International Development and Humanitarian Emergencies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Her focus is on humanitarian crises and refugee and asylee protection. Leena has worked with small to large scale foundations, NGOs, INGOs and government agencies such as Karam Foundation, The International Rescue Committee (IRC), Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), World Food Program (WFP) through the UN and the US Senate.
After their remarks, Williamson and Zahra will respond to questions from webinar participants. The webinar will be moderated by Galya Ben-Arieh, Professor of Political Science at Northwestern, and Deniz Duruiz, the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern. They are the co-coordinators of the Colloquium on Refugees, Migrants and Statelessness. .
The Colloquium on Refugees, Migrants and Statelessness brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars, practitioners and policy makers in order to contribute to the public understanding of movement across national borders, with the aim of reducing the risk of harm, confronting social disfranchisement, and changing the international community’s response to refugee and migrant needs.
