Description:

This talk will be given by renowned scholar on arms control, Steven Pifer, the William Perry Fellow at Stanford's Spogli Institute for International Studies, a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution's Center on the United States and Europe, as well as the Director of Brookings' Arms Control Initiative. He is also a former Ambassador to Ukraine. His Stanford bio is here: https://cisac.fsi.stanford.edu/people/steven-pifer

Arms talks have been one of the few constants in our relationship with Russia, and the only existing U.S.-Russia arms control agreement, New START, is set to expire in February next year.  Will the U.S. Administration allow New START to expire in 2021, or will it agree with the Russians to extend it for five years, as the treaty allows for?

This event is co-sponsored by Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies (REEES) Research Program, and the Political Science Department. The talk will be moderated by Michael Povilus, NU Dept. of Political Science.
