Every year the Mathematics Department celebrates our graduating Math Majors and awards prizes for outstanding achievement in mathematics and contributions to the mathematics community within Northwestern University.

This year's featured guest speaker is Prof. Francis Su of Harvey Mudd College.

"Mathematical Virtues in a Post-Pandemic World"

Abstract: 
What really will you retain from your college math degree, ten or twenty years from now?  And how has your mathematical training shaped your character for the world today?

Biography
Francis Su is the Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and a past president of the Mathematical Association of America. In 2013, he received the Haimo Award, a nationwide teaching prize for college math faculty, and in 2018 he won the Halmos-Ford writing award. His new book Mathematics for Human Flourishing (2020) is an inclusive vision of what math is, who it's for, and why anyone should learn it.
