The Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP) is committed to promoting conversations surrounding issues of race and police violence both within and beyond the classroom. These efforts are of even more importance given the historic and ongoing protests responding to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and countless others. In light of these events, NPEP is announcing Toward Transformative Justice: A Community Roundtable Series on Race, Racism, and Policing that aims to open space for conversation on these topics. The term policing goes beyond the activities of law enforcement officers, and considers a range of social issues such as the prison system, education, policy implementation, and surveillance. This series seeks to provide members of the Evanston and Chicago community with an inclusive space that bridges Northwestern research and community activism. Promoting reflection on these problems is of special importance to NPEP given their disproportionate impact on the lives of our students and their families. Roundtable discussions will be held bi-monthly and host presentations by professors, authors, activist groups, and other key experts contributing to current conversations on race and policing.
