Beatriz Cortez, artist-scholar CSUN
Beatriz Cortez is a visual artist and a cultural critic. Born in El Salvador, she migrated to the United States in 1989. Her work explores simultaneity, life in different temporalities and different versions of modernity, particularly in relation to memory and in exploration of possible futures. She has shown her work nationally and internationally. Recently she has received the Frieze LIFEWTR Inaugural Sculpture Prize (2019) and the Artadia Award Los Angeles (2020). She holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts and a doctorate in Latin American Literature from Arizona State University. She teaches in the Department of Central American and Transborder Studies at California State University, Northridge. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
