Description:

Lessons from Teaching During COVID

Over the last eight months, one million instructors in higher education in the United States have faced upheaval in their instructional practice. Prior to the COVID pandemic, ~80% of faculty in research-focused, residential universities had never taught online. Few had used asynchronous online learning approaches, thought deeply about how their students learn or sought regular feedback. Since the onset of the pandemic, we all have taught online, the majority have incorporated asynchronous online learning as well as multiple educational technologies, and many have reflected on their students’ learning and grown from their feedback. Ten times the number of faculty have sought engaged professional development in teaching than typically occurs in a year. Will this experience lead to cultural change? This talk will explore the hypothesis that massive cultural change in higher education can occur if institutions capitalize on shared faculty experiences, build communities of practice, reward continued innovation and sustain local and central support.

2. Describe a framework for learning that incorporates faculty, student, content and technology elements and apply the core ideas to their own instructional practice.
3. Recognize key ways cultural change in learning and teaching can be supported in higher education and identify one or two to be personally engaged in their teaching community.
