Title of Presentation: Assessing Biomarkers of Magnesium in the Diet and Status
Abstract
Magnesium is an essential mineral in the human body and deficiency has been shown to exacerbate metabolic diseases. About 48% of the US population do not meet the Estimated Average Requirements of magnesium suggesting that there could be a widespread deficiency. Challenges exist in the use of methods to assess dietary intake and nutritional status of magnesium. In this presentation, objective markers that assess dietary intake of magnesium as well as simple and accurate measures of magnesium status, as well as their reference ranges in healthy and cardiometabolic disease states, will be discussed. Results from this study will provide information that will support future research and will focus on magnesium deficiencies in the context of metabolic disease.
