Abstract: Scholars are readily disseminating their work online. As the general public, journalists, and interested government increasingly turn to online sources of information, it becomes ever more critical that there be effective approaches to trace, assess, use, and influence the online dissemination of science. Within this context, my talk presents methods that we developed to (1) investigate how scientific publications spread on various types of online platforms, (2) identify inequalities in the coverage of scholarship based on broad research areas and gender, and (3) analyze online attention to subsequently retracted articles.
