About the workshop:

This workshop explores cumulative methods of student learning to build up towards student comfort with engaging and presenting ideas to their peers. Beginning with the basic mode of receiving information from lectures, it moves towards critical engagement with data or literature to develop thinking, then concludes at student communication of that thinking.

Workshop leaders have backgrounds in mechanical engineering, electronic design, theatre, and English.

About the facilitators:

Abhishek Kottaram Amrithanath (Abhi) is a fifth year PhD student in the department of Mechanical Engineering. He has been actively involved in various teaching roles at Northwestern such as being a TA for eight quarters and leading workshops at the Graduate Student Teaching Conference. While pursuing the Teaching Certificate Program, he worked on a Searle Teaching-as-a-Research project on self-regulated learning. He also co-chairs the McCormick Graduate Teaching Committee. He was awarded the Fellowship in Leadership for his leadership roles in and outside classrooms such as President of McCormick Graduate Leadership council.

Janine Chow is a 5th year in the Interdisciplinary PhD in Theatre and Drama. At Northwestern, she has designed and taught a writing class on adaptation in musical theatre and a remote seminar on childhood in musical theatre. She has also TA'd for both lecture and seminar courses. Janine focuses on inclusivity in course design and classroom dialogue, with attention to empowering and validating individual voices. She's also interested in adaptive pandemic pedagogy with new modes of virtual engagement. In classroom-adjacent spaces, Janine works with undergrads as a residential college fellow and a dramaturg for campus productions.
