Throughout the Spring Quarter, the Center for Latinx Digital Media invites you to a series of weekly seminars held over Zoom on Thursdays. You can now register (click here) to the seminar on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 12-1 PM US CT, where Prof. Eugenia Mitchelstein (Universidad de San Andrés) will give a presentation entitled "A medium of one's own: Women and the media in Argentina."
Abstract: In the last few years, Argentina’s feminist movements have called attention to gender violence and women’s health issues, resulting in the global movement #NiUnaMenos and the legalization of abortion in 2020. However, these campaigns have mostly been conducted on social media. This presentation examines how coverage of these topics on mainstream news media, and marginalization of women as authors and sources, are connected to print newspapers remaining the preserve of older, mostly male audiences.
Eugenia Mitchelstein is associate professor and director of the Department of Social Sciences at Universidad de San Andrés (Argentina), and co-director of the Center for the Study of Media and Society. She has published more than twenty peer-reviewed articles and is co-author of two books and an edited volume.
This event is co-sponsored by the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities, the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the Center for Global Culture and Communication, the Department of Communication Studies, the Department of Radio/Television/Film, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, and the Latina and Latino Studies Program.
