Description:

"Shared & on-demand mobility services: from matching to management"

KENAN ZHANG
PhD candidate, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Northwestern University

Abstract: The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented growth of shared and on-demand mobility services. The rise of transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber and Lyft, has profoundly reshaped the personal mobility industry.  However, our knowledge of the physical and economic principles that govern these emerging mobility services remains limited.  This limitation undercuts our ability to design, operate, and manage these services to meet the conflicting interests of various stakeholders. In this talk, I will introduce my research on the shared & on-demand mobility services with a special focus on the ride-hail service market. I will present a novel physical model for the general matching process in ride-hail and incorporate it into analytical models describing market equilibrium and operations management. In particular, I will show how the matching model implies a loss of economies of scale and how this theoretical result is validated with real data. Then, I will present the equilibrium analysis of ride-hail market with pooling, where important issues like pricing, competition and regulations are explored.
