Pushing the Limits: Children, Athletics and Ethics

Athletics are a central part of the lives of children, adolescents and young adults. Kids are engaging in athletics at younger ages and higher intensities than ever before, bringing a greater understanding of both the benefits and risks of athletic participation. Our latest knowledge has shaped some serious ethical questions. Speakers will examine the benefits and risks of athletic participation and dive into the implications of inclusion and fairness – or the lack thereof. We will also discuss our roles as health care providers, parents and coaches in creating a healthy environment for children who participate in athletics.

We will grapple with ethical issues raised by youth sports such as:

· Has the line blurred between disciplined coaching and abuse?

· What is the role of bioethics in issues that go beyond medicine?

· What constitutes an unfair advantage?

· Has the business of youth athletics led to a “play gap”?

· What is the true purpose of youth athletics?
