Abstract
In this talk, I will discuss recent advances in our understanding of how GABAergic interneuronal microcircuits are organized. In particular, we will be focusing on the GABAergic control of hippocampal pyramidal cell output by two tightly coupled complementary regulatory modules that exhibit remarkable brain state specific segregation in their dynamics during spontaneous behavior. One of these two GABAergic cell classes selectively express cannabinoid receptors at very high levels, and we will discuss new insights into endocannabinoid dynamics during normal and pathological events in vivo. Taken together, these novel results advance our understanding of how GABAergic inhibition is regulated in the mammalian hippocampus at the behaviorally relevant timescale of seconds in vivo.
