Description:

The Center for Catalysis and Surface Science (CCSS) is a strategic research center within the Institute for Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern (ISEN). CCSS promotes interdisciplinary research fundamental to the discovery and atomistically-controlled synthesis of catalysts that optimize the sustainability of industrial and consumer goods.

Title: Electrosynthesis of carbon-based chemicals and fuels

Abstract: Our group has worked on synthesizing C2 and, more recently, C3 chemicals, from CO2 and from CO, using electrochemical reactors working at near-ambient conditions. I will review progress in these areas, but also discuss some new directions (some ongoing, some still being formulated), such as on selective oxidation reactions on the anodic side of such reactors, others relating to seeking synergies between renewable biomass and renewable-electricity-powered electrochemical transformations.

Biography. Ted Sargent is a University Professor at the University of Toronto where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Nanotechnology. In 2021, it was announced that he will join Northwestern University as the Lynn Hopton Davis and Greg Davis Professor, with appointments in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
