Dr. Lena K. Makaroun, MD, MS, Assistant Professor, Division of Geriatric Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Core Investigator, VA Pittsburgh Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion

Lena K. Makaroun, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Geriatric Medicine and Pepper Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh and a Core Investigator at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion. Dr. Makaroun's research focuses on social determinants of aging health and elder abuse. Specifically, her current work aims to broaden our understanding of multi-faceted contributors to elder abuse risk and susceptibility in order to improve elder abuse detection in the health care setting. Her goal is to develop evidence-based interventions to address elder abuse and improve health outcomes, safety, and quality of life for this population. Dr. Makaroun completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, MD at Weill Cornell Medical College, and MS in Health Services at the University of Washington School of Public Health. She completed three years of post-doctoral health services research fellowship through the VA Office of Academic Affiliations before joining faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2019.

The Center for Applied Health Research on Aging (CAHRA) and the Northwestern Pepper Center are pleased to present Pepper Rounds. Pepper Rounds are a venue to showcase high-quality research from scholars across the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Centers network.
