Robert Blecher is an old hand at the International Crisis Group. Currently he directs the organization’s Future of Conflict Program, which examines new and accelerating risks, assesses their effects on conflict, and integrates quantitative analysis into Crisis Group’s traditional field-based approach. Previously he was the organization’s Chief Strategy Officer, responsible for all aspects of strategy development, and served as chief counselor to the organization’s president. He started with Crisis Group in the Middle East & North Africa program, first as Israel/Palestine director and later as the program’s deputy director, co-supervising the research, analysis, writing and advocacy activities of the program’s 20 staff members. He holds a Ph.D. in Middle East History from Stanford University and taught history at Stanford and the University of Richmond. After many years in Damascus, Jerusalem, Ramallah, Cairo and Amman, Blecher currently resides in New York.
